Mrs. Johanson cleaned the house all by herself. Uncle Henrik say's that their will be a casket in their house tomorrow because their Great-aunt Birte died and she will be buried in two days. Annmarie thinks that Uncle Henrik made that up because she knows all of her relatives and that's not one of the them.

When they leave Peter closes the blinds and opens the casket. Inside the casket there are blankets and coats for what Annemarie realizes are jews trying to get to Sweden. Her mama takes the Rosens after the rest to Henrik's boat. When Annemarie wakes up and tries to find mama and when she does her mom says she has a broken ankle. At dinner that night Henrik tells her that the handkerchief ruins the sense of smell of the nazi dogs so they cannot sniff out the jews. Then the story jumps to 1945 when the war ends. They find out that Peter was shot dead by the nazis and that Lise was run over by a nazi car. Then Annemarie finds Ellen's old necklace and promises to wear it until Ellen returns.
Nov 16 Pages 133-137-Afterword- Afterword is about history about what is true and what is untrue. Some people later after 1940 used a handkerchief that had cocaine and rabbit's blood so when the nazi's dog smelled it the dogs nose would be numb and couldn't smell anymore. During the war a 21 year old in the army named Kim Malthe-Bruun got captured by nazi's and was executed. Annmerie was always struck in the heart thinking of that man.

NTS Settings
Setting 1- Copenhagen, Denmark- Annemarie and her family live in Copenhagen, Denmark while it was occupied by nazi soldiers sometime between 1939-1945. It is very dark and dreary because the Germans have strict trade restrictions not allowing many things they would like to have. The nazis are shipping out all of the jews to concentration camps across Europe. Because of that the jews are either in fear or are getting sent to the Danish country side to avoid capture.
Setting 2- Gilleleje, Denmark- A town on the Danish coast only a boat ride away from neutral Sweden. Uncle Henrik lives there and is a fisher. It is also a key spot for getting jews out of the country. They would get on boats and sail to Sweden where they would be safe from persecution. Mama grew up in Gilleleje with Henrik so she is coming home. Very good descriptions!

NTS Characters
Annemarie- A girl about 11 years old who lives in Copenhagen with her family in an apartment. Her best friend is a jew named Ellen. She is very smart and fast stating that she won second place in a school race. She also says she is very smart. She is also very brave but does not know it until after she unknowingly saves the lives of all the Rosens.
Kirsti- Kirsti is Annemarie's younger sister at the age of about 7 years of age. She is very much a loudmouth and there were many times when she almost got everybody killed because of that fact. On the other hand she is also very brave because she stood up to nazi soldiers in the beginning. Good description!

NTS Theme
I think that one of the themes of Number The Stars is that you do not have it that bad. This is shown because the Johannsens might of thought the occupation was bad but at least they were not getting hunted down and killed by the nazis. Another one is that true friends will give anything to help you. This is shown because the Johannsens didn't have to risk their lives to save the Rosens. They could have easily gotten themselves killed in the process, but because they were such good friends they risked their lives for the Rosens. Your second theme could be proven with this story.

Jacob, try for a happy medium between a detailed summary and an extremely brief synopsis. In a synopsis, just tell the major problems that occur in a chapter. You can eliminate the small details. Mrs.S.
